French Onion Grilled Cheese Sliders
My French onion grilled cheese sliders are one of the coziest snack foods you can make this season—perfect for a comfort-food happy hour, a game day appetizer, or just to eat for dinner one night!
French Onion Grilled Cheese Sliders
Ingredients
1 large sweet onion, sliced thinly, plus a splash of oil
1/4 teaspoon of sea salt or kosher salt
4-5 tablespoons of low sodium beef broth
1 package of mini dinner rolls (I used King’s Hawaiian)
1 to 1 1/2 cups of freshly-grated Gruyére
3 tablespoons of softened butter, for toasting
Optional dipping sauce:
1/2 cup of mayonnaise
1 teaspoon of horseradish, or to taste
A splash of Worcestershire
Directions
1. To caramelize the onions: Add the sliced onions to a pan along with a splash of olive oil. Season the onions with sea salt, and heat them on medium-low for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally to make sure the onions don’t burn. After 10 minutes, de-glaze the pan with 1 tablespoon of beef broth, stirring the onions in the meantime. Repeat this every 7-10 minutes, or until the onions have caramelized and are a deep golden brown (around 45 minutes total).
2. Meanwhile, slice the dinner rolls in half to create a sheet of top and bottom buns. You can separate the buns if you want, but it’s easier not to.
3. When the onions are fully caramelized, add the Gruyére and onions to the rolls, then close the rolls. Brush them generously on both sides with salted butter.
4. Toast the sliders in a pan on medium-low heat until they’re crispy, about 4 minutes on one side and 3 minutes on the other. Serve as one whole slider and allow guests to pull them apart, or slice them into individual sliders before serving.
5. Optional: Combine the mayonnaise, horseradish, and Worcestershire for a creamy horseradish dipping sauce.
